Aging Division Director’s Report: Dina Barclay

- She was a guest presenter at the Southern Maryland Dementia Conference on 11/7/12, to speak about local resources for caregivers & the Maryland Access Point as an efficient way for persons to seek information and options counseling about available benefits and programs.  The event was well attended, but less participation than last year’s conference.  The Alzheimer’s Association is requesting advocates to encourage Congress to approve money for research & awareness of Alzheimer's, including caregiver and support assistance.  Also more private fundraising activities are needed.

- The Aging Division is conducting its annual “Adopt-A-Senior” program for low income seniors via the Christmas Connection.  Volunteers will provide & deliver a Christmas basket/prepared Christmas dinner. Contact Ruth Anderson-Cole at 301-934-9305 ext. 5143 if you would like to volunteer to prepare a basket, or to let the Division know about needy seniors who may need a basket so Ruth can add them to the list.

- The annual Christmas party for Charles County Seniors will be held Thursday, December 6th at 10:30 A.M to 2:00 P.M at the Jaycees Center. Remember, please bring non- perishable “can goods” as your “entry” to the event.  Tickets were distributed to ACA members at the meeting.  This is a great opportunity for members to interact with & seek input from up to 500 constituents in one room.

- The Division will facilitate a trip to the annual United Seniors of Maryland (USM) Legislative Forum in Annapolis.  Information will be provided in the SCOOP, as details are made available.  ACA members who are individual members of USM already have a ticket to the Forum included in their membership; all other ACA members who wish to attend will have their ticket paid for by the Division.

County Commissioners Report:

Kim Simonson informed the group that the Waldorf West Library would be opened with a ceremony to be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 2:00 P.M.  Ceremony is open to the public.

New Business:

-Dr. Sanchez provided a health committee update. The topic selected for the 2013 health forum event is cancer of the colon. Dr. Sanchez has contacted Doctors Nagula, S.J Patel and Mathur. Also he plans to contact a dietician and a physical therapist to participate in a seminar at the Richard R. Clark Senior Center from 11:00 A.M to 1:00 P.M on either March 14, or April 11, 2013 (preferred).  Dina will contact the Center coordinator to secure the room.  The first subcommittee meeting for this event will be held after the holidays.  Bill Holman had previously offered help from CCNRC to print the programs for this forum.

-Sonja updated the group on the Outreach Committee plans.  Would like to plan an event for May, during Older Americans Month.  Will hold a subcommittee meeting immediately after the Dec 13th ACA meeting.  Subcommittee members should plan to stay for this meeting.  Kim Simonson has offered to assist with the planning/marketing of this event, and Commissioners office has approved her to do so.  The members are grateful for her support and assistance, as she has expertise in this area.

Membership update-  There are 2 applications pending Commissioner approval.  Sonja Mahoney referred some persons to apply for appointment to the Council of Aging

Guests Attending: Two members from the St Mary’s Area Council on Aging, Ms Betty Broadhurst, Chair and Ms Norma Pipkin, Vice Chair attended.  Betty told us about an increase of robberies in Charles & St Mary’s Counties, they have encountered and she was passing on this information to help pass the word.  St. Mary’s Aging Committee makes visits to each senior center in St. Mary’s County throughout the year; meeting with seniors, asking questions and bringing back information to their board meetings.  They enjoyed attending our meeting today to learn what we were doing & were impressed with our Council’s activities.

Next Meeting:  Next regular ACA meeting will be on Thursday, December 13, at 9:30 A.M at the Clark Senior Center.

Adjournment: the meeting was adjourned by Maurice DiPoli, at 10:55.

Respectfully submitted,

George Estes,  (Member of ACA Board)

Acting Secretary
