The Charles County Health Department and the Charles County Government are raising awareness for the AIDS disease by displaying a square from the AIDS Memorial Quilt at the Charles County Government Building (200 Baltimore Street, La Plata).   The quilt square will be on display from Wednesday, Nov. 29 through Friday, Dec. 1. Guests are welcome from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt was conceived in 1985 by long-time San Francisco gay rights activist Cleve Jones.  On Oct. 11, 1987, the quilt was displayed for the first time on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., during the National March on Washington for lesbian and gay rights. It covered a space larger than a football field and included 1,920 panels.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt celebrates the lives of those who have died from AIDS-related causes. The mission of the AIDS Memorial Quilt is to preserve the powerful images and stories contained within the quilt, while expanding our AIDS awareness and HIV prevention education efforts.
