The Associate County Attorney will serve as an attorney within the Charles County Attorney's Office. The attorney will research and provide both written and verbal legal advice to elected officials, County officers, employees, public boards and commissions. Providing counsel to public boards and commissions may include evening meetings at least twice a month. In addition to general legal research, the attorney will be expected to draft legislation, regulations, and ordinances; give public presentations; and represent the County in both District and Circuit Court in actions brought by or against the County or its officials. The attorney must be able to research a variety of legal issues and interpret not only local laws and ordinances, but also both Federal and State laws. The position requires knowledge of local government law, legal ethics, administrative law, civil procedure, employment law, contracts, real property law, and land use. The attorney must possess excellent writing and multi-tasking skills, and the ability to maintain confidential information.
This position will be filled at the Associate County Attorney I level. Minimum qualifications and experience for Associate County Attorney I include graduation from an accredited school of law; member of the Maryland Bar; and 1 year of post degree experience; judicial clerkship or litigation experience strongly preferred.
