Charles County citizens like to know whenever the County Commissioners, the Governor of Maryland, or the President of the United States declares that flags are to be flown at half-staff. This page contains announcements regarding lowering of the flags.

If you would like to receive these announcements via e-mail, register for the "Breaking News" category in CNS (Citizen Notification Service). After you register, you will be sent e-mail notifications of any change in flag status.

Unless otherwise noted in an individual announcement below, questions regarding the lowering of flags should be directed to the Maryland Office of the Secretary of State.

Tuesday, December 30, 2014 - 12:10pm

This is to advise you that Governor Martin O'Malley has ordered the Maryland State Flag to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Tuesday, December 30, 2014. This is in honor of Corporal Jamel L. Clagett, Badge 447, a veteran of the Sherriff's Office, Charles County, Maryland. Corporal Clagett died on December 21, 2014 as a result of injuries suffered in the line of duty. This action is taken under the Protocol for the Maryland State Flag. Any questions on the above should be directed to the Office of the Secretary of State.

County Commissioner President, Peter F. Murphy has ordered the county flag be flown at half-staff immediately, until further notice. 
 
This is in honor of Patrolman First Class Jamel Clagett, 30, who died in a motor vehicle crash on December 21, 2014. PFC Clagett, a ten-year decorated veteran of the Charles County Sheriff's Office, was assigned to Patrol Operations at the District IV Waldorf station.

Governor Martin O'Malley has ordered the United States Flag and Maryland State Flag to be flown at half-staff on Sunday, December 7, 2014 in honor of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. This is in memory of the brave Americans who sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom and security of our Nation. This action is taken under the Protocol for the United States and Maryland State Flag.

This is to advise you that Governor Martin O'Malley has ordered the Maryland State Flag to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Thursday, November 20, 2014. This is in honor of Firefighter James E. Bethea, a 40-year veteran of the Baltimore City Fire Department, who died on November 12, 2014 as a result of injuries suffered in the line of duty. This action is taken under the Protocol for the United States and Maryland State Flag. Any questions on the above should be directed to the Office of the Secretary of State.

Pursuant to President Barack Obama's Proclamation, the United States Flag is to be flown at half-staff on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014. This is in observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. Accordingly, Governor Martin O'Malley has ordered the Maryland State Flag to also be flown at half-staff from October 12th, 2014. This action is taken under the Protocol for the United States and Maryland State Flag. Any questions on the above should be directed to the Office of the Secretary of State.
