Lowering of the Flag
Charles County citizens like to know whenever the County Commissioners, the Governor of Maryland, or the President of the United States declares that flags are to be flown at half-staff. This page contains announcements regarding lowering of the flags.
If you would like to receive these announcements via e-mail, register for the "Breaking News" category in CNS (Citizen Notification Service). After you register, you will be sent e-mail notifications of any change in flag status.
Unless otherwise noted in an individual announcement below, questions regarding the lowering of flags should be directed to the Maryland Office of the Secretary of State.
This is to advise that Governor Larry Hogan has ordered the U.S. Flag and Maryland State Flag lowered to half-staff effective at sunrise, Thursday, December 29, 2016 and returned to full-staff at sunset, Thursday, December 29, 2016. This is in honor of Sergeant First Class Allan E. Brown, an Army Soldier from Maryland, who died from injuries caused by a suicide bomber attack at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. This action is taken under the Protocol for the United States and Maryland State Flag. Any questions on the above should be directed to the Office of the Secretary of State.
As a mark of respect for the memory of John Glenn, President Barack Obama ordered that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff effective immediately on Friday, December 9, 2016 until sunset on the day of interment (date not yet known). As a matter of protocol, the Maryland flag is lowered to half-staff as well, no flag may be higher than the United States flag.
President Barack Obama has ordered the United States Flag to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset, Wednesday, December 7, 2016 in honor of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. This action is in honor of those American patriots who died as a result of their service at Pearl Harbor. As a matter of protocol, the Maryland Flag is lowered to half-staff as well, no flag may be higher than the United States Flag.
This is to advise you that Governor Larry Hogan has ordered the Maryland State Flag be lowered to half-staff effective sunrise, Monday, November 28, 2016 and returned to full-staff at sunset, Friday, December 2, 2016. This is in honor of LT GEN (MD) James F. Fretterd (RET), who passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2016.
Governor Larry Hogan has ordered the Maryland State Flag be lowered to half-staff effective at sunrise, Friday, Nov. 4, 2016 and returned to full-staff at sunset, Friday, Nov. 4, 2016. This is in honor of former Congresswoman Helen Delich Bentley, who died August 6, 2016.
