Charles County citizens like to know whenever the County Commissioners, the Governor of Maryland, or the President of the United States declares that flags are to be flown at half-staff. This page contains announcements regarding lowering of the flags.

If you would like to receive these announcements via e-mail, register for the "Breaking News" category in CNS (Citizen Notification Service). After you register, you will be sent e-mail notifications of any change in flag status.

Unless otherwise noted in an individual announcement below, questions regarding the lowering of flags should be directed to the Maryland Office of the Secretary of State.

Commissioner President Peter F. Murphy has issued the County flag lowered half staff immediately in honor of Frank Ward, a Charles County Government employee, who died April 5, 2017. The flag will remain at half staff until internment. 

Monday, March 20, 2017 - 11:33am

Governor Larry Hogan has ordered the Maryland State Flag be lowered to half-staff effective at sunrise, Tuesday, March 21, 2017 and returned to full-staff at sunset, Tuesday, March 21, 2017. This is in honor of Edward Chow, Jr., who was the former Maryland Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

On behalf of the Commissioner President Peter Murphy, he has ordered the County Flag be flown at half-staff effective immediately until sunset on March 18, 2017. This is in honor of Roger D. Slaughter, a Charles County Government employee who died on March 10, 2017.

Commissioner President Murphy has authorized the County Flag lowered half staff immediately in honor of Glen Strobel, a 43 year County Government employee, who passed away.  It will remain at half staff until internment.
