National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the State of Maryland and Charles County have announced the designation of a new national marine sanctuary to protect the remains of more than 100 abandoned steamships and vessels built as part of America’s engagement in World War I. Located along an 18-square mile stretch of Potomac River coast in Charles County, Maryland, the new sanctuary boasts a collection of historic shipwrecks dating back to the Civil War, as well as archaeological artifacts nearly 12,000 years old. Its culturally rich landscape also includes sites that represent the history of Native American communities in the area, the once-booming Potomac River fishing industry, and the Civil War. Mallows Bay Park offers excellent outdoor recreation opportunities. Tremendous wildlife viewing areas, single ramp small boating (shallow water) access to the Potomac River, kayak launch, fishing and hiking. Gravel parking for 20 trailers. Paddle through the WWI Ghost Fleet, the largest ship graveyard in the Western Hemisphere.

Boat

• A boat ramp is located within the park for small boating (shallow water)access to the Potomac River. Recently designated a National Marine Sanctuary, kayakers can explore and paddle through the WWI Ghost Fleet, the largest ship graveyard in the Northern Hemisphere, which includes historic vessels dating back to the Revolutionary War and the remains of the World War I steamships. • Due to the size of the water access area at Mallows Bay, groups of 10 or more must pre-register their paddle trip. This process helps minimize congestion and conflict in the boat ramp area.  To pre-register your group, please contact gilroye@charlescountymd.gov at least two weeks prior to the requested date.

Fish

• Fisherman can find a variety of fish in the Potomac River off of Mallows Bay, including bass and snakeheads. A tidal fishing license is required.

Hike

•  Go exploring on the parks 2 miles of hiking trails which also includes informational signs on the sites rich history.

Wildlife

•  Mallows Bay has been described as a bird watcher’s paradise, as well as having tremendous wildlife viewing opportunities; the park inhabits osprey, waterfowl, bald eagles, heron, and an array of marine species and mammals.
