Meeting called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Chair, Amy Blandford. The attendance roster was checked for today’s mtg.   Our guests were introduced. Melissa is a Vice-Principal at Lackey High School. Harsha is an electronics engineer at Pax River.                                                                                                                  


Minutes Approved Tony Silva moved that the May 20th minutes be approved.  Amy Blandford seconded. The May minutes were approved.

Membership Updates

Bonnie Hampton has been approved for a 4 year term beginning July 1, 2013 and ending on June 30, 2017.


Our officers for 2013-2014 (beginning July 1st) are:

As a review for our guests, Amy Blandford, Tony Silva, and Emily Ferren met with the Charles County Commissioners on April 23, 2013.  Our changes in by-laws were approved. We gave our annual report for 2012 and membership roster. We requested 1000 brochures to be printed. It will come from the County’s ADA budget. There was a request from the Commissioners to report public buildings that are not in ADA compliance.

Disability Awareness Day

Sandra Dent was unable to attend today’s meeting. However, she sent information on the upcoming Disability Awareness Day sponsored by Southern Maryland Center for Independent Living and the St. Mary’s Commission for Individuals with Disabilities. The theme is “Seen and Unseen Disabilities”. It will be held at the American Legion in Hughesville, Maryland on September 26th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Providers and consumers will be invited from all three counties in Southern Maryland.

We will be participating at the event.



Abilities Network has a summer program from July 8-August 16. It is a paid work experience and includes workers with disabilities. Contact Robin Lincoln or Serena Norman. Serena’s number is 240-346-8363. Abilities Network’s employment services cultivate partnerships with employers to support inclusion within the work place and independence for individuals with disabilities within competitive employment through customized services. The Community and Employment Partners program provides services designed to support adults with developmental disabilities to live and work as independently as possible in their communities. Abilities Network is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that assists people with disabilities to achieve their personal goals and reach their maximum potential. Abilities Network helps to create a personal path to independence by seeing abilities, not disabilities.


Tutoring rooms are being used at Waldorf West library to teach Braille.

People on the Go operate in Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s with transportation as their primary focus.

June 28th will be the Kick-Off Day for Van Go service between Prince George’s County and Charles County.


The Fed Ex (International Office) in Waldorf is not handicapped accessible. It has seven steps and currently does not offer assistance to customers with disabilities.

Students are looking for transportation to complete internships at job sites in their senior year. We are looking for flexibility in the pickup and drop off times. For additional information on specific needs, check with the Van Go dispatch office at 301-609-7917.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 15th at 3 p.m. at the County Govt. Bldg. (office of Joane Gulvas---B125). The July meeting will be our first meeting with our new officers. Cake will be served in celebration of service for our past officers and welcoming our new officers.
