Meeting Minutes: 8/17/2015

Call to Order:
The meeting was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Emily Ferren, Chair.

The meeting minutes for the June meeting were not approved as we did not have a quorum present.
The remaining dates for year 2015 CIWD meetings were presented as follows:
September 21st, October 19th, November 16th, and December 21st
July meeting, ADA Celebration, Information Booth, Monday, July 20th, 2 - 4 p.m., Lobby of County Government Building. The Information Booth took the place of our regular meeting.
There was an introduction of current members and new members, prior to the Oath of Office.
Jeff Barnett briefly discussed being in the ICU at the hospital, undergoing rehabilitation, and taking tasks for granted, such as using a dishwasher at home. Emily Ferren told the group about being legal guardian for her parents and hoping for accessible options like
restaurants and the movies.
For the new members, although Michelle Fowler, was not present, she sent in a paragraph about herself, "with my son suffering from Type 1 diabetes and witnessing the many disparities disabilities may cause, I want to make a positive change in the County." "Professsionally
I've been a healthcare executive for twenty-four years recently making a switch to real estate.
For those new members taking the Oath of Office today, Brasilia Lowe, has been in Charles County for 8 years and in her job does pre-trial services in Washington, D.C. She also serves on the Disability Employment Committee as part of her professional employment.
Jeffrey Lee Mathews is a special educator at McDonough High School and has been in that capacity for 10 years. He primarily works with 9th and 10th grade students.
Charlie Patterson has been in the County for 12 years. She has worked in the IT field at the Help Desk and as a Program Analyst. Her duties included making accommodations for employees with disabilities. She has also been a substitute teacher.
John Lewis has worked with disabilities since 1974 at the Spring Dell Center, the ARC of Southern Maryland and United Cerebral Palsy. He wants to contribute his knowledge in the context of the Commission.
The Oath of Office was administered to four new members by Chair, Emily Ferren.
Emily Ferren gave a brief report on the ADA Celebration in Washington, D.C. to celebrate 25 years since the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act on July 26, 1990. She participated in a march on the Capital with 1400 participants. She also attended a celebration at the Kennedy Center, which included a photography exhibit by Mary Lou Mobley, a disability right lawyer. She also published a book, ADA Image Project, A tribute to disability rights advocates and their accomplishments. A copy of the book was shared with the members present.
Our guest speaker for the month of September (Monday, September 21st, 3 p.m.) will be the Maryland Secretary of Disabilities, Carol Beatty. Please bring iterested guests. To prepare for our guest, the annual report will be attached to the August minutes.
Nominations for the positions of Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary will be takin in September.
Friday, September 18th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a 25th ADA Anniversary Celebration at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center, 44219 Airport Road, California, MD 20619 with information and fun for all.
