Meeting Minutes: 3/21/2016

Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Emily Ferren, Chair.

     *In attendance: Emily Ferren, Brasilia Lowe, Charliz M. Patterson, John Lewis, Jeff Barnett, Joane Gulvas

     *Excused: Jim Howard, Nicky Pires, Jeff Matthews

A motion was made by Charliz Patterson to approve the February meeting minutes as amended, Emily Ferren seconded the motion and the amended minutes were approved.

Next on the agenda was follow up for two upcoming events: Artists without Limits and Employer Recognition.

Artists without Limits will offer artists with disabilities the opportunity to display their work in the County Government Building. The gallery will be held from July 1st to September 26th. Tuesday, July 19th from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. is the pending date for the reception. Our co-sponsor is the Charles County Arts Alliance.  The next Board meeting of the CCAA is Saturday, March 26th and publicity will be approved at that time.

The next event was a co-sponsored event with DORS and the Commission. It is the 2nd annual Employer Recognition breakfast. The date and time have been selected, Friday, May 20th from 9 a.m. to noon. The group present brainstormed possible locations including the La Plata Fire Hall and New Life. We are checking the availablity of New Life --large meeting space that accommodates 300 people with parking. It was also suggested to invite Derrell Brown, Head of Economic Development for Charles County, to address the audience. It was also suggested that we invite Robert Watson, who owns his own business and will be one of our guest speakers at a future Commission meeting.

We have submitted a request to be on the County Commissioner's agenda to inform the Commissioners of both events and to personally invite them to each one.

Under agency updates and reports, a draft copy of the Statewide Plan for Independent Living was handed out along with comments from the Public Hearing held in Southern Maryland at the Charlotte Hall Library on Monday, March 14th from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Members added the following comments:

     (1) The Transportation Planning Board hired Four Square Consulting to submit a report on public transportation in the area, with the College of Southern Maryland Hughesville campus as a hub for VanGo. Transportation will be 100% accessible. The report is also part of th Hughesville revitalization study.

     (2) The Commission would like an update from Sandra Dent, Executive Director of the Southern Maryland Center for Independent Living, as that center serves our disabled population. (We have had one presentation from Sandra Dent, and the group would like to have an update after the SPIL is submitted.)

     (3) In the area of youth transition, ages 14-26, it was requested that mental health services also be included.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:45 p.m.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, April 18, 2016 at 3:00 p.m.
