Meeting Minutes

May 18, 2015

Charles County Government Building, Office of the Safety Office

 

Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Emily Ferren, Chair

  •                           In attendance:  Emily Ferren, Joane Gulvas, Amy Blandford, Tonya-Kay Speers, Dwayne Ross, Robin Lincoln and Nicky Pires.
  •                           Excused:  Jim Howard, Keri Williams, Sandra Dent

The meeting minutes for the April meeting were approved.

The remaining dates for year 2015 CIWD meetings were presented as follows:

June 15, July 20, August 17, September 21, October 19, November 16, and December 21.

 

Guest Speaker:

Our guest speaker was Dwayne Ross from Spring Dell.  He gave an overview of the three programs operating at Spring Del; (1) Day Program, (2) Supportive Employment and (3) Residential Services.  THere is also a component for Volunteer Acitivities such as Benedict Farm and the Animal Shelter. Dwayne is the facilitator for People on the Go, a self-advocacy group meeting. They currently meet the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Spring Dell Center, Inc., 6040 Radio Station Road, La Plata, MD.

Contact Dwayne Ross at 757-236-8207 for further information or dross@springdellcenter.org. Dwayne is interested in locating families and caregivers to deliver self-directed services to consumers. Dwayne is also a member o the Job Developers Alliance.

 

Updates/Reports on Meetings Attended representing the Charles County Commission on Individuals with Disabilities

Nicky Pires, Amy Blandford, and Tonya-Kay Speers attended the follow up on the Transportation Forum. This involves teh strategic plan for Southern Maryland facilitated through the MTA.  Suggestions included coordinated taxi service, anti-loitering legislation for the Park 'N Ride at 301, and improved services for Dial-A-Ride that includes regulations and licensing. There will be at least one additional follow up meeting to complete the strategic plan.

Nicky Pires also attended the Commission on Aging Annual Plan Update. Taxi voucher programs also came up at that venue.

Emily Ferren submitted a written report for the Maryland Alliance of Disability Commisisons and Committees meeting held on Monday, May 11th in Howard County. The keynote speaker was Carol A. Beatty, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Disabilities.  Emily reported on the Employer Awards Breakfast hosted by the Job Developers Alliance held on April 8th.

 

Website Update:

The website will be named "Disability Resources in Charles County".com, it is through GoDaddy and will be updated by Tonya-Kay Speers. Send information that you would like posted to TK Speer @ Navigations@outlook.com.

The website will be available by July 20th, 2-4 p.m.

July Meeting: ADA Celebration, Monday, July 20th, 2 - 4 p.m. at the Charles County Government Building.

Agency Updates:

Abilities Network is cutting back on staffing due to statewide budget cuts. It was suggested that we invite Ruth Davis as our guest speaker for the June meeting. She is the Work Force Development Director with the Tri-County Council. For information on ODEP (Office of Disability Employment Policy), check with the Department of Labor.

 

Next meeting will be held on Monday, June 15, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at the Charles County Government Building, Office of the Safety Officer. The election of officers for the next fiscal year will be held at our July meeting.
