Sandra was greeted by the commission and began to discuss the services provided by the Center for Independent Living such as training, provided assistive technology and community awareness to help those with disabilities maintain an independent lifestyle both at home and in the community. Currently there are 7 centers located in the state of Maryland. However, it is important to note that services can be transferred with the individual when they move out of the state as well.

Sandra discussed developing a wide database of organizations for members to be referred to so that they can receive services throughout the county and being a central location for those seeking information for those services for members since those spports vary with each individual. One of the focuses discussed was obtaining and referring supports for veterans over the last two years.

Sandra also discussed the dynamics of training transitioning youth from public education that receive special services will be referred to the center to maintain those accommodations and services as a more independent lifestyle approaches for further education or to be a productive member of the local work force as well as providing transportation to other centers such as the Spring Dell Center (http://springdellcenter.org/) in La Plata, Maryalnd.

The group also discussed the dynamics of individuals with disabilities, as well as those developmental disabilities, to attend college and creating a bridge through centers such as the Souithern Maryland Center for Independent Living in corelation with colleges such as the College of Southern Maryland to provide opportunities for those with disabilities to attend college and receive services while attending as well as accommodations through the college for classes. It was noted that this seems to be something that is in high demand currently in Charles County.
