Allyson Evans, Young Adult Librarian at the new Waldorf West Branch of the Charles County Public Library invited the Commission to visit the new library and check out the Teen Central area. She would like programming to be inclusive and was asking for advice from Commission members. Allyson is especially interested in inclusion based summer programs. Each member introduced themselves and their agency. Some possible ideas that came up were: DORS has college bound students, ages 16-21, with vision impairments. Abilities Network is looking for jobs in the community for adults in their early 20’s that have that age level, but not necessarily a high reading level. Some age appropriate titles are available through Ortho Publishing. We also discussed disseminating publicity at the six high schools in Charles County. Another idea included transition students, ages 18-21, that would enjoy programs. Another way to reach teens
are through their parents---and using the Parent Center newsletter. Please send additional ideas to Allyson Evans at email@example.com
Jim Krumke, discussed Transit Management and Mobility Management, both services that are available through the SMCIL, from a MTA grant. Referrals are being accepted.
Assistance is given for how to get from point A to point B. We are still working on a connection to Prince George’s County. For additional information, contact Jim Krumke at firstname.lastname@example.org: SMCIL “Supporting people living with disabilities to lead self-directed, INDEPENDENT lives”.
Tony Silva reported on Disability Mentoring Day held on October 17th with 30 students being interviewed for summer internships. The event was held at Pax River.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:20 p.m.
The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, December 17th at 3 p.m. at the County Govt. Bldg. (office of Joane Gulvas---B125)
