Call to Order:
The meeting was called to order at 3:05 p.m. by Emily Ferren, Chair.
- In attendance: Jim Howard, Emily Ferren, Joane Gulvas, Amy Blandford, Sandra Dent and Nicky Pires.
- Guest: John Hartline, Executive Director, Tri-County Council of Southern Maryland
- Excused: TK Speer, Keri WIlliams and Robin Lincoln
The meetin minutes for the December 15, 2014 meeting were reviewed. The minutes were approved by Nicky and seconded by Joane.
- Website: TK Speer was not present to update the group on the website so this will be tabled until next month.
The remaining dates for year 2015 CIWD meetings were presented as follows:
February 23 -4th Monday due to holiday, March 16th, April 20th, May 18th, June 15th, July 20th, August 17th, September 21st, October 19th, November 16th, and December 21st.
Joane Gulvas will send in the form to schedule a session with the County Commissioners to give an overview of the Charles Coutny Commission on Individuals with Disabilities. We had agreed to have Hands Only CPR training at one of the meetings. The demonstration/training will be added to the April agenda.
Amy Blandford, DORS, told us about the Job Developer Alliance Group networking opportunity for April 2015. The date will be sent to the Commission members. Amy also has a new email contact at DORS.
Nicky Pires, Tri-County Council, related two separate activities. The first is a kickoff event on January 27th at 1 p.m. at Tri County Council for a Transportation Study. The event is by invitation only. The second event is open to the public and attendance is encouraged. It is the Southern Maryland Coordinated Public Transit Human Services Transportation Plan, completed in 2007, updated in 2010, and time for a revision. The date is Wednesday, February 25th at the Waldorf JayCees from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Jim Howard, Community Services, announced the new route St. Charles D that services the stadium and new high school area. The buses have stabilized and are now in good working order. The Governor's budget cut back on doctor's pay for medical assistance (with fewer doctors available in the Southern Maryland - in areas such as pain management). As a reminder the phone number for commuter buses is 301-274-1922.
Sandra Dent, Center for Independent Living, will send an ad for an Independent Living Specialist due to a vacancy. March 3rd will be the day in Annapolis for Centers for Independent Living and the Maryland Statewide Independent Living Council. If you have anything for Legislative packets that day, please send to Emily Ferren at email@example.com.
Emily Ferren, MSILC, announced that the survey to get input from individuals with disabilities, their family members, friends, care attendants and other stakehoulders has been extended to March 31, 2015. Input is strongly encouraged. The survey can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KRS3KWZ. The Maryland Statewide Independent Living Council is seeking representatives from Southern Maryland to serve on the Council. Meetings are the 3rd Friday of every other month from 12 - 3 in Rockville. Copies of Charles County Directory of Human Services, 2015 Edition, produced by the United Way of Charles County was handed out to those in attendance. We are now listed in the Directory (p. 10).
Charles County has a Special Olympics delegation that is training at the Gwynn Educational Center on Radio Station Road in La Plata on Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The remaining practice dates are January 29, February 5, 12 and 19.
Guest, John Hartline, Executive Director of Tri County Council for Southern Maryland brought copies of a "New Member Orientation" that he has shared with newly elected Commissioners in the tri county area, Delegates, and Senators. It outlines the Tri County Council with mission, vision, and services. Todd Morgan is now the new Chair of the Board of Tri County Council for Southern Maryland.
The next meeting will be held on February 23rd, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at the Charles County Government Building, Office of the Safety Officer, Room B140,
