The Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their community and trains them in basic disaster response skills. Individuals will go through an extensive 20  hours of training sessions on disaster preparedness (vulnerability in their community, actions that they and their families should take prior to an emergency), fire safety (fire chemistry, hazardous materials, fire hazard suppression, use of fire extinguishers and sizing up), light search and rescue (search techniques, rescue techniques and rescuer safety), team organization, and medical operations (diagnosing and treating air obstruction, bleeding, shock, triage, first aid, assessment of patient and establishing a medical treatment area). Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.
