Can You Reschedule Your Court Date?
Yes. You can ask the court to postpone your court date.
However, you must still appear in court unless a judge or magistrate approves your request in advance.
How to Request a New Court Date
You can request a postponement in one of these ways:
Option 1 - Write a Letter
- Write a letter and file it with the Clerk's Office
- Explain why you need to change your court date
Option 2 - File a Motion
- File a motion with the court
- You can:
- Write your own motion, or
- Use the Motion for Continuance / Postponement (Form CC-DC-070)
What to Include in Your Request
Make sure your request clearly explains:
- Why you need to reschedule
- Any documents that support your request
Also provide your:
- Current name
- Current address
- Phone Number
This helps the court contact you about its decision.
